It’s August.
The NBA season that is older is very long past, and the NBA season feels so far away. Each of the crucial free agents are signed, Summer League is at the books, and all we’ve got now is the NBA program release and fantasies of matches to come.
But that doesn’t mean we can’t talk about next year’s MVP race. This year proved to be a runaway win for James Harden, but 2017’s race between Russell and Harden Westbrook was an all-timer, and next season’s race looks wide open.
So what does it take to win NBA MVP? Three criteria stand out:
He’s got to score a good deal. Basketball is more than just scoring, but MVPs are in the thick of their race that is scoring.
He must win a good deal. NBA MVPs since 1990 typical 63 wins, and they play for a top-3 seed. When we pick MVPs from lesser groups, we make it wrong. MVPs has to be winners.
He has to have a winning story.
That final point is the most significant of all. The NBA MVP tells the story of this season, and Republicans need to buy in that story. Can a candidate overcome something? Did he surprise everybody? Can he prove he’s really»valuable,» whatever that means?
