A seemingly cursed matchup has resulted in the most hastily assembled superfight in UFC history. For the fourth time in four decades, MMA fans have been deprived for a matchup involving Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov. I really don’t understand what we’ve done to displease the MMA gods so much, but at this point it is just unkind of the number of occasions they insist on playing this joke on us.
But the silver lining here is that we get a superfight. Granted, a lot of people are likely still too sour to actually enjoy it, but Max Holloway moving up in weight to fulfill Khabib is a killer matchup that under some other circumstances would have been migrated into the moon and backagain. What’s more, the lightweight name is up for grabs. Ferguson has been stripped of the belt that is thickest, and the undisputed strap will be there for your taking. Holloway gets an opportunity to become only the second simultaneous two-division winner in UFC history, while Khabib could well develop into the lightweight kingpin many expected him to be.
In the co-main, Rose Namajunas will defend her strawweight strap to the first time in a direct rematch against Joanna Jedrzejczyk. «Thug» Rose pulled off the 2017 Upset of the Year when she starched J-Check in UFC 217, but there are still many who see the win as a fluke.
